 Periscope 3.0

1/2001

Periscope is a browsing device for Wherehoo that allows a user to explore the physical world by navigating its digital shadow - in this case, web pages situated at the places they represent in the real world.

Periscope 3.0 is built into a Rembrandt Model II 5x7 view camera mounted on a tripod with pan head. It queries the Wherehoo Server, which binds digital representations of physical entities to their locations, to find web pages at their real locations in the physical world.

Completed in January, 2001, enhancements in 3.0 include: replacement of the 2.0 "search radius" control with a "time"control, allowing navigation between 60 yars ago and the present, and further improvement of the front and side-mounted range-and time-select knob and lever. The schematic diagram of the search distance and radius, relative to the Periscope's location, has been augmented with a timeline correlated to the front "time" control.

Periscope "attract screen" - the word Periscope and a Media Lab color barPeriscope 3.0's media player improves the 2.0's Media Avenger with the addition of MP3 detection and playback in addition to handling JPG images and HTML pages stored at remote locations via URLs, or in the Wherehoo server itself. 3.0 also has an "attract mode" to bring the device back to a title screen following a period of inactivity.
